Is je voertuig defect of ben je betrokken bij een ongeval zonder gewonden, dan tracht je eerst en vooral je voertuig te parkeren op een plaats waar het mag staan.If your vehicle is broken down or you are involved in an accident without injured persons, then first and foremost you try to park your vehicle in a place where it is allowed to stand.
Ook bij een ongeval zonder gewonden op een kruispunt, maak je als het mogelijk is, het kruispunt vrij.Even in an accident without injured persons at an intersection, you clear the intersection if possible.
Is er wat lading op de weg gevallen, dan verwijder je die zo snel mogelijk.If some load has fallen onto the road, you remove it as quickly as possible.

Dat doe je:You do this:
- in de eerste plaats door de gevarendriehoek te plaatsen,first of all by placing the warning triangle,

De gevarendriehoek moet goed zichtbaar opgesteld worden:The warning triangle must be set up so that it is clearly visible:
- op gewone wegen op minstens 30 meter voor de plaats van het ongeval,on ordinary roads at least 30 metres before the scene of the accident,
- op autosnelwegen op minstens 100 meter.on motorways at least 100 metres.
- hij moet voor naderende voertuigen zichtbaar zijn vanaf 50 meter.it must be visible from 50 metres for approaching vehicles.
Moet verplicht in een auto aanwezig zijn:Must be compulsorily present in a car:
- gevarendriehoek;warning triangle;
- brandblustoestel;fire extinguisher;
- fluojasje;high-visibility vest;
- verbanddoosje.first-aid kit.
Bij een ongeval zonder gewonden moet je de politie niet laten komen, maar moet het Europees aanrijdingsformulier worden ingevuld en door de betrokkenen ondertekend. Met je handtekening bevestig je dat je akkoord gaat met wat op het document is ingevuld.In an accident without injured persons you do not have to call the police, but the European accident statement form must be filled in and signed by the parties involved. With your signature you confirm that you agree with what has been entered on the document.

Tip Voorzijde formulier: wordt door beide partijen samen ingevuld en ondertekend. Achterzijde formulier: vult elkeen nadien (vb thuis) apart in.Tip Front of the form: is filled in and signed by both parties together. Back of the form: each party fills it in separately afterwards (e.g. at home).
Je moet trouwens steeds ter plaatse blijven als je betrokken bent bij een ongeval en vanaf 15 jaar ben je verplicht om je identiteitskaart te tonen, als een van de betrokkenen erom vraagt.Moreover, you must always remain at the scene if you are involved in an accident, and from the age of 15 you are obliged to show your identity card if one of the parties involved asks for it.
Bij discussie, of als iemand het aanrijdingsformulier niet wil ondertekenen, laat je de politie komen. Kan die niet komen, dan ga je zelf zo snel mogelijk aangifte doen in het politiebureel.In case of a dispute, or if someone refuses to sign the accident statement form, you call the police. If they cannot come, then you go and report it yourself as quickly as possible at the police station.

Heb je iemands voertuig of eigendom schade toegebracht en vind je de eigenaar niet, doe dan alles om je identiteitsgegevens achter te laten of verwittig je de politie.If you have caused damage to someone's vehicle or property and you cannot find the owner, then do everything possible to leave your identity details behind or notify the police.
Een defect voertuig mag je nooit langer dan 24 uur op de openbare weg achterlaten.You may never leave a broken-down vehicle on the public road for longer than 24 hours.

Zijn er slechts lichtgewonden, dan parkeer je het voertuig op een plaats waar het mag staan.If there are only minor injuries, then you park the vehicle in a place where it is allowed to stand.
Kan dat niet, of zijn er zwaargewonden, dan doe je weer alles om te voorkomen dat er nog meer ongevallen gebeuren:If that is not possible, or if there are seriously injured persons, then you again do everything to prevent further accidents from happening:
- Gevarendriehoek;Warning triangle;
- Waarschuwingslichten;Hazard lights;
- Ronkende motor afzetten;Switch off the running engine;
- Niet roken.No smoking.
Vergeet niet het fluojasje aan te doen als je op een autoweg of autosnelweg de auto verlaat.Do not forget to put on the high-visibility vest when you leave the car on an expressway or motorway.
- Bestuurder: is dat verplicht.Driver: this is compulsory.
- Passagiers: niet verplicht, maar doen het best ook.Passengers: not compulsory, but they had best do so too.
Als het niet echt nodig is, loop dan niet op de pechstrook of op de rijstroken, maar neem plaats achter de vangrails.If it is not really necessary, do not walk on the hard shoulder or on the lanes, but take a place behind the crash barriers.

Voor je de hulpdiensten verwittigt, moet je eerst de situatie inschatten:Before you notify the emergency services, you must first assess the situation:
- Waar ben je?Where are you?
- Zijn er een of meerdere licht- of zwaargewonden?Are there one or more lightly or seriously injured persons?
- Zitten er personen gekneld in een voertuig?Are any persons trapped in a vehicle?
- Is er misschien brand of brandgevaar?Is there perhaps a fire or risk of fire?
Gebruik bij voorkeur een praatpaal als die in de buurt is. (Behalve bij brand in een tunnel).Preferably use an emergency phone if there is one nearby. (Except in the event of a fire in a tunnel.)
Anders vorm je het internationaal noodnummer 112. Via dat nummer wordt automatisch ook de politie verwittigt, die trouwens altijd bij een ongeval met gewonden moet komen en de nodige vaststellingen zal doen.Otherwise you dial the international emergency number 112. Through that number the police are automatically notified as well, who in any case must always come to an accident with injured persons and will make the necessary findings.
Als er brand of rook hangt in een tunnel kan dit giftige gassen veroorzaken. Verwittig in dat geval de hulpdiensten via het noodnummer 112.If there is fire or smoke in a tunnel, this can cause toxic gases. In that case, notify the emergency services via the emergency number 112.

In een tunnel is het vaak donkerder dan buiten op de rijbaan. That is why it is best to take off your sunglasses and switch on the dipped beam, well before you drive into a tunnel.
Als je dit net voor, of pas in de tunnel zelf zou doen, lijkt het voor achterliggers alsof je plots remt. Dit zou tot een schrikreactie kunnen leiden bij je achterliggers.If you were to do this just before, or only in the tunnel itself, it would seem to those behind you as if you are suddenly braking.
